When you claim Social Security is one of the most important retirement decisions you will make. The age you start affects your monthly benefit for the rest of your life.

At Becker Retirement, we help clients evaluate claiming strategies based on their health, income needs, spousal benefits, and overall retirement plan.

There is no single right answer for everyone. The best choice depends on your unique situation.

Understanding the tradeoffs is the first step toward maximizing your lifetime benefit.

Full retirement age and early claiming

You can claim as early as age 62, but your benefit is permanently reduced. Waiting until full retirement age (66 to 67 depending on birth year) gives you 100 percent of your earned benefit.

Delaying beyond full retirement age increases your benefit by about 8 percent per year until age 70. There is no additional credit for waiting past 70.

Early claiming makes sense for some people, especially if health concerns or immediate income needs are factors.

The key is understanding what you give up or gain with each option.

Spousal and survivor benefits

Married couples have additional options. A lower-earning spouse may claim a spousal benefit worth up to 50 percent of the higher earner's full retirement benefit.

Survivor benefits allow the surviving spouse to receive the deceased spouse's benefit if it is higher. Coordinated claiming strategies can maximize household income.

Each year you delay past FRA adds ~8% to your benefit until age 70.

"For couples, Social Security is a household decision. The right strategy considers both lives, not just one benefit check."

Coordinating with your retirement plan

Social Security should fit into your broader income plan alongside pensions, portfolio withdrawals, and other sources.

Claiming early while still working can trigger benefit reductions if you earn above certain limits. Taxation of benefits also varies based on total income.

We model different scenarios so you can see how each claiming age affects your long-term income.
